he "64 for Suu" campaign「六十四字挺蘇姬」行動

The campaign "64 for Suu" aims to amass global support for Aung San Suu Kyi and all other political prisoners in Myanmar (Burma) and use the concentrated show of outrage and concern to push for practical actions by the international community to secure positive change in Myanmar. This campaign is organised around the renewed global interest in Myanmar in the wake of Aung San Suu Kyi's trial and in the run-up to her 64th birthday on 19 June, hence the name of the campaign.

The campaign centres around the website http://www.64forsuu.org/index.php. People can show their support by writing or filming solidarity messages in 64 words and post them to the website. There will also likely be a range of public activities eg. demos or vigils organised around the www.64ForSuu.org website as Aung San Suu Kyi's 64th birthday on 19 June approaches.

Amnesty International is supporting this campaign because we want to sustain and increase the global attention and momentum of calls for Aung San Suu Kyi's release. Equally importanly, we're supporting this campaign because we want to take advantage of the renewed global interest over Myanmar to actively campaign for all political prisoners in Myanmar - this will be a more meaningful and strategic use of our collective campaigning energies. Many of these individuals are forgotten prisoners - and they are most at risk and most in need. And Aung San Suu Kyi has said publicly many times that the people in prison have it much tougher than she does.

This is the draft statement by former political prisoners, it addresses Aung San Suu Kyi:

"The continued denial of your freedom is an unacceptable attack on the human rights of all 2,156 political prisoners in Myanmar. As former political prisoners, we share the pain of injustice. We call on the UN Security Council to urgently secure the release of all Burmese political prisoners by imposing a global arms embargo on the Myanmar government. We stand in solidarity with you."

If you scroll to the bottom of the e-mail, you'll find more information about the campaign and why the message is in 64 words.

Why this statement?

1. it is a show of solidarity to Aung San Suu Kyi and all her fellow political prisoners in Myanmar

2. it identifies a shared experience between all political prisoners: the pain of injustice

3. after a condemnation and a show of solidarity, the former political prisoners demand meaningful intervention by the UN Security Council (being the most powerful body in the UN) to free all political prisoners in Myanmar

4. the coalition of groups involved in the www.64forsuu.org campaign agrees that a renewed call for a global arms embargo on Myanmar would represent meaningful intervention by the UN Security Council (being a military regime with a very poor human rights record, the acquisition of more arms by the Myanmar government can lead to more human rights violations and strengthen its basis of existence; we all know it's not easy at all to get a global arms embargo because of the politics involved but if lots of groups are making that same call on the day Aung San Suu Kyi gets her verdict, hopefully it can make some important people sit up and turn some heads)

5. a global arms embargo is a form of punitive action. it seeks to pressure the Myanmar government into making concret human rights improvements, starting with the release of all political prisoners in the country
